“Well….certainly I can do this ONE little thing…..” …encouraging and motivating oneself…

~

Ah…. getting myself going…an ongoing challenge, at times!
The past few weeks, I’ve been taking care of  household “fix-its”…
lots of “unfamiliar” tasks or confusing “choices,”
feeling more than a bit of confusion…
and having a  tendency to just stop and avoid all of those “tasks.”

So…once again…reminding myself….

“Certainly I can do this….”

~

How to find ways to get myself started
when the “task” probably IS realistic and manageable?
Sometimes, it’s soooo  hard to get going!

~

How to give myself a “green light”…
a signal that it’s okay to “go”

A good start,
…a green light…
might be to reassure myself…
“certainly, I can do this…..”
(this= one little, first step)
~

certainly I can do this~

Sometimes, I  come up with lots (!!!) of seemingly “valid reasons” or rationalizations about why I can’t do something or don’t particularly “feel like” or “want to” do something…those “reasons” seem to function like stoplights…big, bright, red stoplights… for my energy and motivation!

~

Sometimes, there seem to be pushy,  limiting “thoughts”…
simply “thoughts”….”opinions”…not truth…
a few  habitual thinking patterns that I may have developed over the years?

~

certainly I can do this...limiting thoughts~
~

~

Shifting out of limiting thoughts…
and into more affirming, confidence-filled thoughts…

“Certainly I can do this…”

~

certainly I can do this...affirming thoughts

I’ve noticed that when I do “get myself going,” I often gain some momentum, and then “keep going.”

But getting started can be a challenge.  So…a simple little statement I say to myself seems to help…. just to think about one tiny, little first step…this one little thing…

~

~

And, of course, any project or undertaking is a series of “one little thing”….one leading to the next, leading to the next….a series of simple little “things…”

~

~

a path consisting of many “one little thing’s”…
sometimes once I get going, I get lots and lots accomplished!
~

~

It’s a bit like teaching little kids…encouraging a little bit at a time…to just get started…one little action being a “jump start” to get some momentum going… reassuring myself…

“well, certainly I can do this….”
this one little step

Note: when I was working, I think I may have been powered by busy-ness and adrenalin surges. Now that I’m not working at a “job” anymore, I’m finding that this wonderful calmness I’m feeling lacks that adrenal, “must do this right now” rush…and so I’m having to learn new ways to access energy and motivation amidst more calmness of mind.

And so…a few related posts about this “endeavor.” (whoops…I see that many of these pages/posts were created when I was still teaching, so I guess it’s been a continuing challenge…. live and learn, I guess…a big part of my teaching “job” was to help the kids I taught develop more persistence, so lots of early pages were for “them” )

I can so understand what you’re writing about … I used to beat myself up about “being lazy” – when all that happened was that I was gradually getting over my adrenaline addiction. I’m not joking. It’s a hormone addiction to stuff we’re producing ourselves, despite all its side effects like fear and aggressiveness. And once we calm down we feel “flat” instead of enjoying the calmness.

But I think you’re very much on the right track: The “motivation” that used to come from the adrenaline is not needed when doing things in the Now, step by step, with a larger vision and intention as guides instead of rigid plans, schedules and timelines – just enjoying the flow of it 🙂

    • Yes, it’s amazing to transition out of adrenaline motivation and learning to access a variety of deeper motivations…I do better with interesting projects than with “house stuff”…so, learning to do that now too. 🙂
I actually got so much done today…what I would have thought would be impossible, but as you say, step by step within a larger vision…voila, done! 🙂

I used to accomplish so much when I was in the corporate world, but, I was very stressed out. Now that I am retired, and have a peaceful life which I enjoy, I notice that if I am not doing something constructive I feel guilty, lose motivation and feel less energetic; for this reason I keep myself busy with creative projects. Yet, sometimes I have to force myself to get motivated to do certain tasks.

    • Yes, a peaceful life is sooooooooooo wonderful and such a relief, after so many years of working. Isn’t it amazing to now have time and energy for so many varied creative projects? For me, it seems to be the “tasks” of everyday living that are less engaging and motivating…live and learn, I guess…. 🙂
