a poem by my Aunt,
“96 and Still Writing”
who grew up on a New Hampshire farm,
part of a very old time, pioneer family,
old time, poor New Hampshire Yankee farmers
~
written several years ago
about a local road,
“The Old Mountain Road”
in Sanbornton, New Hampshire,
resonating with the spirit of those early settlers
…the spirit of courage, hardship, struggle
~
As we approach our own Thanksgiving week and day….
appreciation, gratitude, thankfulness
to those early, courageous pioneers
who endured, persisted, persevered
“whispers from the families of a long ago year”

Perhaps we can listen carefully
for their soft and fleeting whispers…
to listen and receive their wisdom.
What might they whisper to each one of us?
What might they encourage?
What might they reveal?
What might they remind us to be thankful for?
listening carefully for the whispers
from those of a long ago year…

You can see the connection she feels to the earlier people in the area where she and her sisters grew up.

The photo, words and concepts are beautifully blended and will remain featured in my mind’s eye beyond this weekend. I shall treasure this thought: If we do all learn how to walk softly perhaps we will hear the whispers from families of a long ago year.

Thank you…I’m happy the ideas resonate.
I notice that the more softly I do walk, the more whispers I do hear…coming from all directions, all times… May we all learn to walk softly and listen carefully….

Love how the poem brings us back to today while letting us keep a tenuous hold on the past!
