“Do all you can, with what you have….” an inspiring quote from Nkosi Johnson Nurturing Thursdays

~

An inspiring quote from Nkosi Johnson, 1989-2001, a child from South Africa who lived for many years with HIV.  He was  a remarkably courageous child who made a significant difference in the lives of many.

Here is Nkosi’s  inspiring suggestion….for us all…no matter what our circumstances, no matter what our challenges…to simply do all we can….

to just try as much and as often as we can

~

I first heard that inspirational quote a few years ago, during one of the Sounds True, Compassionate Brain online shows, a truly wonderful, free series of archived shows,  the seventh show, Compassion in the Wider World, featuring Rick Hanson and Jean Houston.

A few minutes ago, I heard the quote again, as I listened to the Week 3  teaching of Foundations of Well Being, also by Rick Hanson.

Tying in with these ideas…. for the past few weeks and yesterday and today, I  helped out with teaching very beginning English to several women who are refuges from Ethiopia and Eritrea…these women speak very close to NO English and I’m sure have many daily challenges…but they are so warm, appreciative and cheerful! They seem to be living examples of the message that Nkosi spoke about.   They are simply amazing women!  They do not give up!

This morning, I got a bit tired as I was  helping them  and thought perhaps I’d better slow the teaching down….and then several of the women asked for more words…more reading English letters…more practice with saying basic numbers…trying so hard to remember English letters and numbers…trying to remember their own phone numbers!

During a short break, yesterday, I watched several of the women (and they are NOT young!)  go outside, where they walked or ran around the track area during the break time!….. what amazingly inspiring women they are!

Nurturing Thursday: I’ve seldom missed posting on Nurturing Thursdays, but almost didn’t post today,  because I got SO worn out teaching this morning…but then I thought of the commitment, warmth, energy and persistence of those wonderful women I taught… and of the Nkosi Johnson quote…. a reminder to just do whatever we can….and so, after I heard  that wonderful quote again, I found these “pages,” from November, 2012… continuing inspirations!  Nurturing each other and ourselves….

I hope THIS link works!…maybe it’s time for me to take a nap???? )

~

Added a few hours later:  I just stumbled upon this video of Ernest Borgnine reading a delightful children’s book…The Rainbow Fish, a book with such an important, warm hearted message…so similar to Nkosi’s message…of the happiness we create as we share whatever we may “have” …sharing that with others…the happiness that is nurtured in ourselves and others…. from living with generosity….

“How wonderful that you……….” there’s so much we can “rejoice” in…. Nurturing Thursday

~

rejoice there's so much you can rejoice in

~

The term “rejoice” refers to feeling a warm sense of happiness or celebration when we notice  happiness, compassion, kindness, generosity or a sense of well being in others or ourselves….isn’t that a wonderful word?…and a wonderful kind of celebration!

~

Some of my very favorite pages…. “rejoicing”

~

rejoice ideas from Easy Path book

~

Yesterday morning, I wanted to print out a few copies of one of these pages…to take to “Engaging with Life,” a class that nurtures, supports and encourages these ideas.

I was going to print out 2 or 3 color copies of that one page….BUT…the printer started printing out more and more copies of the page!…one after another after another!… and I couldn’t stop the printer!…it just kept printing until there were 15 copies of that one page!  Can you believe that???  The printer seemed to be doing it’s own kind of “rejoicing!”  I was standing there in awe of what had happened!

So, I took those many bright, colorful, happy pages to the class and shared them with others in the class…a shared celebration of a “rejoicing printer!”

Here’s the page, below,  that just “kept on printing!”… a celebration by the printer!

“I’d like to help out…” I wonder what I could do to be helpful?

~

Compassionate action ram dass what can i do to be helpful

~

I’ve been looking around for places that I might be able to  “help out” in the communities near my home.  As part of that exploration, I started  taking a UC Berkeley class, Engaging with Life, at OLLI, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.   (The class has an amazing syllabus with links to interesting articles and videos: syllabus ) The professor of the class provides a warm, supportive environment, with contacts to a variety of  remarkable local agencies that welcome volunteers.

I was a “Resource Specialist” in elementary school for many years, so figured that I might have some experience that could be helpful in classrooms where adults are learning English.

So…. I signed up to volunteer at Refuge Transitions, in some adult English language classes for refugees and immigrants from various countries of the world.

But…then…some doubts started popping into my mind … “what if….???”  ….”what if….???”

~

Compassionate Action like to help out but....what if..

~

I was amazed!!!  I’ve had lots of experience teaching English reading and speaking to children who are second language learners…and yet…the doubts continued to pop up!  Isn’t that amazing?

So… I went back to reminding myself of the “steps” from a post I made in July… “Compassion In Action”   The actual steps are from a book called Compassion in Action, by Ram Dass and Mirabai Bush.

~

Compassionate Action ram dass steps and i would like to help out

~

I thought lots more about each of those steps!  I wanted to think of specific ideas I might “say” to myself for reassurance and encouragement.

Perhaps, some of these ideas might be useful for others to use,  too….

~

Be brave…..

a variety of potentially reassuring and encouraging ideas

Last week, I did start volunteering in a beginning adult English class and had a wonderful time!  The people in the class that day were immigrants or refugees from  Eritrea, Ethiopia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Guatemala and Myanmar and a few other countries! All of the students were warm, friendly, cheerful and willing to try hard!  And, to think, I was concerned about having courage to help out???   (Ah ha!  That’s suggestion #4 under “Be brave”….. “Focus on others needing help or support, not oneself” )

Compassionate Action ram dass steps focus on others be brave
What remarkable courage ALL of the people in that class have….new country, new language, new customs….new everything….all day, every day….new, unfamiliar and potentially confusing!  And I was worried? Wow!

So…

“Foundations of Well-Being” Rick Hanson’s 12 month online workshop for nurturing your sense of well being

~

~

If you plant and nurture enough flowers in the garden that is your life,
you won’t have to worry about “weeds”….
the “weeds” won’t grow….
and there won’t be “weeds” to pull!

~

Plant Flowers,nurture youself

~

Nurturing Thursday…sharing an opportunity to learn more about a year long program to encourage and develop greater and deeper nurturing of yourself and others in your life!

Rick Hanson Foundations of Well Being

I’ve taken lots of workshops from Rick Hanson and every single workshop has been wonderful!  I’ve learned so much in all of his workshops and have become so much more kind, compassionate and understanding with myself and others through what I’ve learned.

Rick  has organized this 12 month online  program called Foundations of Well-Being…..a program for nurturing a broad sense of well being in the participants!

I’ve signed up for this Foundations of Well-Being program and wanted to let others know about it, too! It starts on October 7th!

Rick is an amazingly kind, caring, good-hearted, organized and well spoken person!  I have a deep sense of confidence and trust in him and in whatever he teaches or presents!

~

Foundations of Well Being...why offering this class~

~

Many years ago,  I heard Rick use the phrase “Plant flowers, Pull Weeds” …I created the flower image to remember it!  It’s a phrase and image that has continued to resonate in me and has motivated me in nurturing my own sense of well being.

I just looked back into the Pocket Perspectives “archives” and see that I posted “Plant Flowers, Pull Weeds”  on the second day of this blog, April 4, 2011!  (Oh, I see that Piles of Smiles, 4/3/2011, was the very first post on Pocket Perspectives! More “flowers” in the form of smiles!  :) )

~

As I wrote in the beginning of this post:

If you plant and nurture enough flowers in the garden that is your life,
you won’t have to worry about “weeds”….
the “weeds” won’t grow….
and there won’t be “weeds” to pull!

~

Plant Flowers, Pull Weeds, plant enough flowers and weeds won't be a problem

~

I encourage readers of this blog to go to The Foundation of Well-Being website  and see if this might be a workshop that could contribute to nurturing your own sense of well-being, too!

Plant Flowers nurturing thursday nurture yourself

Hmmmmm…. nurturing a sense of well being….planting flowers….the song “You belong among the wildflowers.”   I especially love wildflowers!!   But…ummmm…I just thought of this.  Wildflowers might be considered “weeds” by some people.  I’m gonna have to think more about this!  There’s a message there, but I’m not quite catching what it might be!
