“Well….certainly I can do this ONE little thing…..” …encouraging and motivating oneself…

~

Ah…. getting myself going…an ongoing challenge, at times!
The past few weeks, I’ve been taking care of  household “fix-its”…
lots of “unfamiliar” tasks or confusing “choices,”
feeling more than a bit of confusion…
and having a  tendency to just stop and avoid all of those “tasks.”

So…once again…reminding myself….

“Certainly I can do this….”

~

How to find ways to get myself started
when the “task” probably IS realistic and manageable?
Sometimes, it’s soooo  hard to get going!

~

How to give myself a “green light”…
a signal that it’s okay to “go”

A good start,
…a green light…
might be to reassure myself…
“certainly, I can do this…..”
(this= one little, first step)
~

certainly I can do this~

Sometimes, I  come up with lots (!!!) of seemingly “valid reasons” or rationalizations about why I can’t do something or don’t particularly “feel like” or “want to” do something…those “reasons” seem to function like stoplights…big, bright, red stoplights… for my energy and motivation!

~

Sometimes, there seem to be pushy,  limiting “thoughts”…
simply “thoughts”….”opinions”…not truth…
a few  habitual thinking patterns that I may have developed over the years?

~

certainly I can do this...limiting thoughts~
~

~

Shifting out of limiting thoughts…
and into more affirming, confidence-filled thoughts…

“Certainly I can do this…”

~

certainly I can do this...affirming thoughts

~

I’ve noticed that when I do “get myself going,” I often gain some momentum, and then “keep going.”

But getting started can be a challenge.  So…a simple little statement I say to myself seems to help…. just to think about one tiny, little first step…this one little thing…

~

~

And, of course, any project or undertaking is a series of “one little thing”….one leading to the next, leading to the next….a series of simple little “things…”

~

~

a path consisting of many “one little thing’s”…
sometimes once I get going, I get lots and lots accomplished!
~

~

It’s a bit like teaching little kids…encouraging a little bit at a time…to just get started…one little action being a “jump start” to get some momentum going… reassuring myself…

“well, certainly I can do this….”
this one little step

~

~

A cheerful reminder, taped up on our cupboard door…
with a few google-eyes attached!
:)

“Well, certainly, I can do THIS…”

Now that I’m not working at a “job” anymore, I’m finding that this wonderful calmness I’m feeling lacks that adrenal, “must do this right now” rush…and so I’m having to learn new ways to access energy and motivation amidst more calmness of mind.

And so…a few related posts about this “endeavor.” (whoops…I see that many of these pages/posts were created when I was still teaching, so I guess it’s been a continuing challenge…. live and learn, I guess…a big part of my teaching “job” was to help the kids I taught develop more persistence, so lots of early pages were for “them” )

We thank….the farmers…each and every day of the year….

~

~

We thank the farmers

~

Ahhhh….November….throughout the next few weeks and months, our minds may turn to enjoying the bounty of the harvest…enjoying choosing, buying, preparing, cooking, sharing and eating a variety and abundance of amazing foods with our families and friends!

~

May we continually be aware and offer our thanks to the many hardworking farmers… local, around the country and all over the world……for all that they offer to the health, happiness and well being of ourselves, our friends, our families and people everywhere…

~

We’re all so interdependent…..
interdependent within the forces of nature, the earth, the air, the sun….
and interdependent with, and among, each other!
the farmer, the tractor manufacturers, the truckers, the distribution center workers…
the grocery store and Farmers’ Market stockers and clerks,
There are soooooo many people connected to even ONE potato
that sits in that pan as it’s about to be mashed!
It’s truly remarkable how connected we all are!

~

~

We thank the farmer interdependence

~

………….. interdependence ……………

~

we thank the farmers the earth2~

~

Farmers on both small local farms and larger farms are such incredibly hard workers….day after day!…month after month! ….year after year! ….  whether they’re “owners” of the farms, “owner/workers” or “farmworkers” on those farms…whether from “here” or “there” or  “far away”….they work so hard and offer us so much!  May we nurture a deep sense of appreciation for all farmers….  for their incredibly hard work and abundant contributions to all of our lives!

~

we thank the farmers on both small farms and large farms

~

And so…today…tomorrow….this week…this month…every single month of the year…may we offer our “thank you” to, and feel a deep sense of appreciation of,  all  the farmers in the world!  It’s not just on the ONE day in November…Thanksgiving Day here in America…. that we can offer our thanks.  We can nurture a deep sense of appreciation for  farmers each and every day of every single year….and perhaps we can begin with…today!

~

Thank you so much!

Nurturing Thursdays…. Two Sunsets, by Ludovico Einaudi

Nurturing Thursday

Sometimes, we might feel nurtured by…
a warm, gentle sense of  touch,
the taste of a yummy treat,
the scent of a favorite flavor,
beauty we take in through our eyes

And sometimes….
it might feel good to just gently close our eyes,
take in a soft breath,
and to simply….
listen

Perhaps listening to
a gurgling brook,
waves at the seashore,
wind blowing through the leaves,
laughter in the next room

Or perhaps…..
instead of only looking at beauty,
“listening” to beauty

Instead of only looking at a beautiful sunset…
perhaps, we can “listen” to a beautiful sunset, too,
listening to a “sense” of the beauty of that sunset,
 listening to the sunset

Perhaps, gently closing our eyes, taking a soft nourishing breath and listening,
nurturing ourselves by listening to  this beautiful music…
“listening” to a sunset
listening to the music of ….Two Sunsets….
simply… listening to the exquisite beauty of the sun setting

~

~

Sunday afternoon: Oh no… a variety of youtube videos of Ludvico Eindaudi’s piece “Two Sunsets” were available to be shared on Thursday, and I had embedded one of those videos in this post. I love that selection and it was  such a joy to listen to it here!

But now…on Sunday,  all of the youtubes of that piece have been blocked.  I guess there must be some copyright issues?  Well, that’s understandable….but I wish that the exquisite inspiration and nourishment of that lovely music could have been shared.  Oh well….. imagine…

~

And so….
perhaps simply imagine “listening” to the beauty of a sunset…
simply imagine….

~

Can you “hear” the sun setting?

“Do all you can, with what you have….” an inspiring quote from Nkosi Johnson Nurturing Thursdays

~

An inspiring quote from Nkosi Johnson, 1989-2001, a child from South Africa who lived for many years with HIV.  He was  a remarkably courageous child who made a significant difference in the lives of many.

Here is Nkosi’s  inspiring suggestion….for us all…no matter what our circumstances, no matter what our challenges…to simply do all we can….

to just try as much and as often as we can

~

I first heard that inspirational quote a few years ago, during one of the Sounds True, Compassionate Brain online shows, a truly wonderful, free series of archived shows,  the seventh show, Compassion in the Wider World, featuring Rick Hanson and Jean Houston.

A few minutes ago, I heard the quote again, as I listened to the Week 3  teaching of Foundations of Well Being, also by Rick Hanson.

Tying in with these ideas…. for the past few weeks and yesterday and today, I  helped out with teaching very beginning English to several women who are refuges from Ethiopia and Eritrea…these women speak very close to NO English and I’m sure have many daily challenges…but they are so warm, appreciative and cheerful! They seem to be living examples of the message that Nkosi spoke about.   They are simply amazing women!  They do not give up!

This morning, I got a bit tired as I was  helping them  and thought perhaps I’d better slow the teaching down….and then several of the women asked for more words…more reading English letters…more practice with saying basic numbers…trying so hard to remember English letters and numbers…trying to remember their own phone numbers!

During a short break, yesterday, I watched several of the women (and they are NOT young!)  go outside, where they walked or ran around the track area during the break time!….. what amazingly inspiring women they are!

Nurturing Thursday: I’ve seldom missed posting on Nurturing Thursdays, but almost didn’t post today,  because I got SO worn out teaching this morning…but then I thought of the commitment, warmth, energy and persistence of those wonderful women I taught… and of the Nkosi Johnson quote…. a reminder to just do whatever we can….and so, after I heard  that wonderful quote again, I found these “pages,” from November, 2012… continuing inspirations!  Nurturing each other and ourselves….

I hope THIS link works!…maybe it’s time for me to take a nap???? )

~

Added a few hours later:  I just stumbled upon this video of Ernest Borgnine reading a delightful children’s book…The Rainbow Fish, a book with such an important, warm hearted message…so similar to Nkosi’s message…of the happiness we create as we share whatever we may “have” …sharing that with others…the happiness that is nurtured in ourselves and others…. from living with generosity….

“How wonderful that you……….” there’s so much we can “rejoice” in…. Nurturing Thursday

~

rejoice there's so much you can rejoice in

~

The term “rejoice” refers to feeling a warm sense of happiness or celebration when we notice  happiness, compassion, kindness, generosity or a sense of well being in others or ourselves….isn’t that a wonderful word?…and a wonderful kind of celebration!

~

Some of my very favorite pages…. “rejoicing”

~

rejoice ideas from Easy Path book

~

Yesterday morning, I wanted to print out a few copies of one of these pages…to take to “Engaging with Life,” a class that nurtures, supports and encourages these ideas.

I was going to print out 2 or 3 color copies of that one page….BUT…the printer started printing out more and more copies of the page!…one after another after another!… and I couldn’t stop the printer!…it just kept printing until there were 15 copies of that one page!  Can you believe that???  The printer seemed to be doing it’s own kind of “rejoicing!”  I was standing there in awe of what had happened!

So, I took those many bright, colorful, happy pages to the class and shared them with others in the class…a shared celebration of a “rejoicing printer!”

~

rejoice in happiness of others

Here’s the page, below,  that just “kept on printing!”… a celebration by the printer!
